Purity – More now than ever, this is such an important topic to discuss with our children. I believe the pressures our children face today to lose their purity are even greater than when we were children. It seems like society no longer treats this as the gift that it really is. Look at billboards, movies, commercials, etc. for examples of this truth.
I was recently offered the opportunity by Pumpkin Seed Press to review The Three Weavers Plus Companion Guide – A Father’s Guide to Guarding His Daughter’s Purity by Robert and Shelley Noonan.
Although this seven-week study guide was written for a father and daughter to accomplish together, it would also be a useful tool for a single mom.
As the book explains in its Foreword, The Three Weavers, an allegory, is an excerpt from Chapter 14 of a book entitled The Little Colonel by Annie Fellows Johnston. It is intended to be “a tool for fathers to mentor their daughters between the ages of nine to sixteen.”
The story of The Three Weavers is about three fathers and each of their daughters and how they each handle the gift of the loom, “that from beam to shuttle is of the purest gold.” It is given to them by Clotho, the ‘godly woman who is the overseer of the weavers.’”
I suggest, prior to reading this story, that you show your daughter images of a loom. I believe it will help your daughter better understand the tale.
I don’t know about you, but I like to have things planned out; it helps me to stay focused. This study provides just that by offering you a guide which you can easily follow on a weekly basis.
When I opened the book I was captured by its first page, a page where a father is to place a photo of himself with his daughter. As I began reading the book, some of the thoughts that crossed my mind included, “How sweet!” and “Awww!” This was just at the opening section entitled, “How to Use This Book.” After completing this section, I was excited to learn how this study was to be implemented.
The paperback includes six chapters, each followed by a discussion guide, a father’s bible study, and a description of activities for the father and daughter to complete together. The book concludes with a “Purity Ceremony.”
I found the questions in the Discussion Guide and Father’s Bible Study to be very insightful. The Father’s Bible Study helps the father dig into the Bible to learn what the Bible specifically says about his role as a father. The questions also help the father understand the importance of discussing what can be a difficult subject, purity, with his daughter.
The questions provided in the discussion guide offer both father and daughter a wonderful opportunity to talk about subjects such as obedience, friendship, crushes, trust, and purity.
If you’re searching for a bible study that will gently guide you through this difficult topic with your daughter, this may be the book you’re looking for.
Disclosure: I was provided with a free copy of Three Weavers to review on my blog. The opinions I have given are mine and may differ from others, but were not influenced by the company or the free book provided.

ReplyDeleteAre there any similar books for boys?
ReplyDeleteI wish there was, but they only have it for girls. There is a wonderful study for boys entitled Boyhood and Beyond. My son read it last year and really enjoyed it. I thought it was a fantastic book. It doesn't discuss purity, but it has a wealth of wisdom. You may be interested in reading my review: http://www.asliceofhomeschoolpie.com/2011/06/boyhood-and-beyond.html. Pumpkin Seed Press does carry this book as well.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could win this book because I am a great fan of Robert and Cherry Noonan.
