A Lesson in Wood Carving

My sons had the opportunity to learn some basic wood carving skills today.  A gentleman by the name of John Sanders, a semi-retired Boy Scout leader and wood carver, among other things, taught a roomful of Homeschool students this fun skill.

Using a piece of foam and a plastic knife, he directed the children on how to carve an owl figure, a favorite bird of his.  He provided various slides outlining each step, and using his own cutting knife, demonstrated the process.

The final product was to look like this:

To view more of John's work, and to see images of all of the steps needed to carve your own owl, visit his Picasa Web Album.

  1. How fun. My art group just used a similar technique to create some awesome art dolls.
