William McKinley Presidential Library & Museum Field Trip

McKinley Memorial
If you live anywhere near Canton, OH, I would highly suggest you stop and visit the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum.  Several families from our homeschool group recently visited this site and were greatly impressed.  There were a lot of things to see and experience.

First of all, the children really enjoyed going up and down these massive stairs which lead to the McKinley Memorial.

When we went into the museum we were pleasantly surprised by what we saw inside.

We saw many old artifacts like the bike above.  What we found most interesting was the way they had laid out a replica of an old town from William McKinley's era.  They had a doctor's office (pictured below), a fire department (with a pole which some children slid down), a toy store, an old store, a log cabin, a dentist's office, and several other "buildings."

The photo above pictures furnishings which belonged to President McKinley.  Do you see President McKinley and his wife?  They are mechanical figures that move and speak.

We learned that this was his desk and that he used the box which held the American flag as a stool to stand on when he made speeches so that people could see him.  Did you know he was only 5'7"?

We did not expect to see dinosaurs, but there were some of those there too!

They even had a NASA area.  Doesn't this robot look like Wall-E?  The children had a great time in this area.

They enjoyed having their "shadows" taken.  After the light turned on and off, shadows of their figures were left on the wall.

They enjoyed playing with the "gadgets."

And answering questions concerning energy efficiency.

The museum also included a planetarium.

Outside the museum there was a beautiful park just a roll down the hill.

I asked my oldest son what part of the day at the museum was his favorite and he said, "All of it!"

I agreed!

If you have visited this museum, please share your thoughts.

I was born in Canton and grew up in North Canton! My husband and I actually met at McKinley Monument (we were with friends), so it has a special place in my heart. =0) Three years later we got married and ended up living just a few blocks north of the Monument, so we drove past it everyday.

My son enjoyed this field trip so much that it's already on our list of field trips for this year. Cool story about you and your husband. :-)
