The Great Learning Awakening - A Homeschool Apology - Review/Giveaway

Have you ever read a book and thought to yourself, "Everyone should read this book!"?  This is how I felt after completing The Great Learning Awakening - A Homeschool Apology written by Lee Dickerson.  My recommendation is that anyone who has a school-aged child own a copy of this book.  Let me explain why.

First, don't let the "Homeschool" in its title fool you.  This is more than just another book on the topic of homeschooling.  It is a publication packed with well researched information on the issue of education, written in an easy to understand language.

As a homeschool parent my original purpose for choosing to homeschool is no longer the only reason I continue to do so.  The Great Learning Awakening perfectly put into words most of the reasons I consider myself blessed to be able to homeschool.  It's about offering my children what I feel is the best education possible.  Lee Dickerson's research on education helped affirm my thoughts.

I want to share several paragraphs in particular which stood out during my reading:
"This book is a call to all of you who are parents to renew and affirm a commitment to being involved in your children's education.  Start by discovering that the more you include yourself in your child's education, the better he or she will perform, achieve, and be."
This confirms my original statement which is that whether you homeschool, or have a child that attends another form of school (public, private, charter, etc.), The Great Learning Awakening is a book that will help you understand how you can help your children get the type of education they deserve.  As Lee shared, homeschooling is just one option in achieving this.

Another paragraph which stood out to me was:
"The public school teacher says, "Sit down across from me, and I will teach you."  The homeschool teacher says, "Sit down next to me, and we will learn together."
In her book, Lee shares why she chose homeschooling for her family and describes what education looks like in her home. This choice has caused people to question her "qualifications."  I enjoyed reading her response to the question, "What makes you qualified to teach your kids?"
"I am not a police officer.  What qualifies me to discipline my children?  I am not an employer.  What qualifies me to assign my children chores?  I am not an economist.  What qualifies me to give my children an allowance and guide them in the wise exercise of its use?  I am not a dietician.  What qualifies me to make their meals?...  My qualification rests solely in my ability to love my children to a length, a width, a height, and a breadth that no certified teacher will ever be able to match."
If you are considering homeschooling, purchase this book.  It will give you a wonderful perspective on the type of education you can offer your child.  If your child attends a traditional school, The Great Learning Awakening will provide you with solid information pertaining to the many ways you can make a difference in your child's education, and the importance in doing so.

  2. I actuallt homeschool my 3 children. They are "older" and I feel I struggle with the negative side of things often. I would love a book full of factual data to reassure me =). I feel confident, but it gets tiresome dealing with others after this long! Thank you

  4. Lee Ann is an acquaintance of mine that I hold in high esteem. She is a very intelligent, passionate individual who loves the Lord and her family, and is not afraid to speak the TRUTH. I was so excited to hear that her book was published, and eagerly read the introduction. I am very much looking forward to having the book in my hands at some point to be further enlightened and encouraged!
