For a long time I had wanted to disable our cable TV. I struggled with the types of shows and commercials that my children were being subjected to. When we sat down as a family to watch TV I found that I had to constantly switch the channels whenever a commercial appeared.
As far as I was concerned the shows being promoted on cable TV were completely inappropriate for my family.
I also spent more time then I wanted explaining to my children why they could not watch certain channels, such as the Disney channel. (Parents, are you aware of the types of shows Disney is promoting to your children?) Sometimes it caused arguments that completely drained my heart. I was sick of it! Can any of you relate to this?
Unfortunately, my husband was not on board with my suggestion of unsubscribing to cable TV.

Television has a great influence to modern days people. Being subscribed is not good, but being unsubscribed is also not possible. What a great post you have. I will pin it. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteMy family decided to do streaming tv. That is a very good option and depending on what stream provider you use, there are no commercials.
ReplyDeleteWhat streaming provider do you use?
DeleteOne thing I like most is: YOU decide "when" to watch. Meaning: on Netflix they have a few "series". When you have TV you have to watch it when THEY air. Or DVR it. However, the series on Netflix you watch what you want when you want. How many you want. AND NO commercials :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's a great point to add!
DeleteCable TV hasn't been in my living room since 2007. I have Netflix and I allow my daughter 3 hours a day to watch some cartoons and kids shows that way (I admit, for my own sanity). I can get most adult programing online, so we only really need internet here. Congrats to sniping the tube! Your wallet will thank you!
ReplyDeleteCable TV isn't something that's missed when you have other options, is it? :-)
DeleteI want to do that too. I have kept tabs the past year on what we watch and noticed that the kids and myself prefer watching shows off Netflix and Amazon Prime then we do on tv. The only time we're watching Dish is when there's a NCAA football game or a new episode of The Walking Dead. That is it. And yet I'm stuck in our contract for another 8 months. We'll revisit this topic with the hubs when it gets closer to the end of the contract.
ReplyDeleteChelle, 8 months will go fast! Maybe if enough people opt out of cable, they'll consider more family friendly choices. :-)
DeleteI would not want to unsubscribe to cable.. Yes the shows are much different then when we were kids, but there are also shows that are good for the kids
ReplyDeleteI just wish they offered more family movies/shows. Those are far and few in between on cable (or regular TV for that matter).
DeleteWe have cable before the super typhoon hit our place. It was my father who actually wanted it. He loves to watch movies on some local channels which is his stress reliever from work. Then here comes my two year old daughter who loves Disney. We can only watch Disney channel with a cable TV. But today, we do not have cable and not even a tv because it was slammed by the super typhoon.
ReplyDeleteI'd love it if you'd share how your non-TV day compared to your TV day, just out of curiosity. We don't watch a lot of TV here, that is, we limit daily use of it and in the summer we rarely watch it. I don't think we'd miss it a whole lot if for some reason we had to spend a day (or 2) without watching it, although I will admit, it would be easier to do without it during the summer months. :-)
DeleteI like some of the shows but do find that we only watch a handful of the channels to be honest. I love discovery, national geographic and the likes, the kids really like the show "How Stuff is Made" (I think that's what it's called.) It shows how things are made in factories and so on.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I would shut off the tv altogether, there are lots of learning opportunities there and it's also a great babysitter while I make dinner some days, especially when we are stuck inside due to weather. Sometimes we will sit as a family and watch a movie. At the moment we are enjoying a reality cooking programme - but that's on free to air...
Yeah I don't think we could give up tv completely! Is that wrong? :)

We enjoy watching TV. It's one of our family activities - we always watch a movie together on a Saturday or Sunday night. We grab ice-cream and find a good movie on Netflix (or we'll rent a movie). I believe it will be one of those fond memories my children will remember.
DeleteI don't believe that watching TV is wrong, I just enjoy having more control over what we watch. :-)
Cable is SO expensive, and when my boyfriend and I moved in together, we refused to pay for it. We got rid of it and have been able to save so much money! I can understand wanting to control what your children watch. Netflix is great, so is Amazon Instant Video.
ReplyDeleteThere's no arguing the expense of Cable TV.
DeleteI love this post. A nice reminder and we cancelled cable the first of the year to get on a better budget!
ReplyDeleteGetting rid of cable definitely helps to save money. :-)
DeleteI too wonder how this would affect my family. I am not a fan of all the things that are going on, on these family shows.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I wish I had the strength to do this as well - maybe one day!
ReplyDeleteJess, it took us several years of thinking about it before we pulled the plug, so yes, maybe one day for you, too. :-)
DeleteI tried Netflix once but did not find enough variety. Perhaps I need to look at it again. However, I don't have any small children to consider. Thanks for sharing your views on cable.
ReplyDeleteHaving young children definitely helped me to be more discerning about what we watched. :-)
DeleteI love my cable TV but sometimes I think about getting rid of it. I just don't know if I'd like finding what I want to watch on netflix or online better.
ReplyDeleteCara, you could always try out Netflix (or other similar program choices) to see how you like it. It could help you decide whether this is something that would work for you and your family.
DeleteI love having cable tv. I have no problems with my boys watching inappropriate show because all they are interested in are the sports channels and sponge bob. (They are 22 and 20 years old). We watch movies on tv during the weekends and I love my cooking shows.
ReplyDeleteSome of those cooking shows are fun to watch aren't they? Being that your children are adults, I can understand your thoughts on this.
DeleteGreat post. We haven't had cable TV in over 6 years. We have a Roku and mostly utilized netflix.
