I Lost 27 Pounds in 5 Months - A Trim Healthy Mama Book Review

Trim Healthy Mama Book Review by A Slice of Homeschool Pie.com #TrimHealthyMama

I was standing among several ladies when I overheard them talking about weight loss, a subject I was interested in for myself (I was at my heaviest weight at this time). I asked for more information and this is how I learned about Trim Healthy Mama.

Trim Healthy Mama Authors' Background

Trim Healthy Mama is a book written by two sisters, Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison. These two ladies invested years in personal research to find a method of eating that would provide the healthiest benefits to their bodies. What they realized was that the Bible outlines how they should eat. As shared in their book,
"Finally, a very drawn out "finally," the biblical approach hit us in the face and everything fell into place."
It was through this knowledge that they were able to find the right balance among all the different eating plans they had researched. After a six year writing project, they were able to share that knowledge with their readers.

What was it about Trim Healthy Mama that captured my interest?

There were two things I had in common with these ladies right from the beginning, they were both home educators and we shared the same faith. Also, like me, they had tried all sorts of diets in search of finding a healthy way of eating; these included: raw food, (did that), vegetarian (that, too), vegan (yep), juicing (been there), and several others.

When I went to Amazon to view the inside of the book I read the chapters in which they describe four fictitious women: Whole Grain Jane, Drive thru Sue, and Raw Green Colleen and I related to all three. (They also introduce Farm Fresh Tess.) These ladies all represented different diets.

How does this program work?

Under this program it is important that you separate your fats from your carbohydrates. As the authors explain, when you eat these two fuel sources together, one will be used as fuel, while the other one will be stored as fat. As stated in the book, fat doesn't make you fat, it's the mixing of fat with sugars or starches that make you gain weight, because those things convert to glucose and excess insulin.

You also want to make sure that you include protein in every meal and stay away from sugar. However, this doesn't mean you can't have sweets. They offer alternatives such as xylitol, stevia, and Truvia. (My family has been able to use Truvia and stevia without any side effects, but there are some people who do not do well with these products.) (Note: When I first began this program I craved sweets ALL THE TIME. This changed after a few months on the program.)

They outline 5 different types of meals:
  • Satisfying (S) - higher fat (protein), lower carbs and includes non-starchy vegetables
  • Energizing (E) - moderate amounts of starch, lean protein, and a little bit of fat
  • Fuel Pull (FP) - low carbs, low fats (these are the foods that are good for snacks)
  • S Helper - adds a little more carb to S meals, but not enough to make it a Crossover
  • Crossover - carbs (in the quantities suggested for E meals) and liberal amounts of good fats from S category (Note: Crossovers will help you maintain weight, but not lose weight)
It's important that you leave three hours between meals. This will allow your body to process one fuel source before introducing another one.

Cost of book

Trim Healthy Mama costs $35.00 and is a little over 600 pages long. You actually get two books in one; the first section explains the program and includes topics related to hormones, sexual intimacy, exercise, and supplements, whereas the second part of the book includes the recipes.

You can purchase their ebook for only $19.95.

My Trim Healthy Mama Journey

I started the Trim Healthy Mama eating plan loosely on September, 11, 2013. When I first began the program, I found it very time consuming. I didn't wait until I finished reading the entire book to begin eating the Trim Healthy Mama way, and as a result, trying to figure out which foods I could eat in the right combination was difficult for me. I found myself thinking about meal plans ALL THE TIME. For the first week or two, I felt hungry throughout the day. I believe the reason for this is because my body was detoxifying.

From September 11 to September 24, I had lost 5 pounds and by October 4, 10 pounds.

Once I started incorporating a lot of the recipes from the book in combination with joining the Trim Healthy Mama Facebook group, I became more confident with this method of eating.

I have now lost a total of 27 pounds! I have 10 more to lose to reach my goal weight. Because I understand the plan and no longer have to spend more than a few minutes to come up with a meal plan, I know what I can do (and not do) to reach my goal.

Conclusion

I am really glad I learned about this book. I love feeling like a normal person now, no longer having to worry about not eating meat (Remember how I mentioned the various ways I used to eat?), and incorporating more vegetables into my diet. I enjoy fitting into my smaller-sized clothes and having more energy.

I love that this is a way of eating that I can easily see myself continuing. I was so tired of dieting (to lose weight) and just wanted to eat in a way that would help me to stay healthy with the added benefit of weight loss. I feel I have found this with the Trim Healthy Mama diet (eating plan).

  2. I enjoyed reading! I am 3 weeks into this...same thing, 6 lb. loss first week, now nothing more...but have only 10-15 to loose, so know it will be slower. I do enjoy waking with no more pain and feeling good. I laughed about time. Consuming at first...I agree...but each day it gets more manageable! You look great! Keep up the good work.

    1. I, too, went through weeks in which nothing changed, and then all of a sudden the weight loss would start again. Nothing for weeks, and then 3 lbs in one week.

It was interesting to see through my story and others, how our bodies work.

  3. I've been using THM principles since Aug. lost 19lbs. feel better and went down about 3 sizes depending on the brand, at a point where I can be satisified with my weight and if I can drop another 5lbs. great, but if not it's ok also, daily exercise is a must for me as well.

  4. How much do you think you HAD to exercise? I always shy away from ANY dieting type things b/c I can't and not allowed to exercise. I hear all the time that you MUST exercise to have any program work.

    1. I haven't exercised consistently with this program and have lost 24lbs! It certainly does work without exercising .

    2. Jen, great question! Honestly, I exercise on and off. I honestly don't think that the exercise was the main factor in my weight loss, because of the fact that it wasn't consistent. (I mostly walk on the treadmill when I can.)

  5. I am working on losing weight as well. I am going to need to try this out because I have a HUGE problem with craving sweets. I am taking a fat burner and appetite suppressants that both work excellently ... but I still need to deal with my cravings.

    1. Sweets was one of my downfalls before changing the way I eat. When I first began this plan I made a sweet food item almost everyday. The craving was so strong! Now, I rarely have a sweet tooth craving and only eat sweets on one day of the weekend (just for fun).

I got into really great shape after I had my daughter a few years ago. Then gained a ton of weight over the past two years due to my non-stop stress eating. I would love to get back into shape and have been slowly making changes again.
