What My Son Learned About the Gift of a Generous Heart

An article about the generosity of a young boy and the lesson he learned from it. By ASliceOfHomeschoolPie.com #raisingboys #charactertraining

Today my son learned a wonderful lesson about the gift of a generous heart.

"Mommy, mommy!" said the little boy sitting next to my youngest son.

"What?" his mother asked.

"Mommy, look what he gave me!" continued the boy in an excited tone as he pointed to my son.

He was referring to the toy and rock my son had given him. My son looked at me with a smile on his face and then asked me to give him his wallet. He wanted to buy the little boy something from the vending machine.

Soon afterward, my son's friend arrived. My son decided that he wanted to buy something for her, too.

As the two children stood in front of the vending machine, another mom came up to me and asked if it would be okay with me if she were to buy my son some candy from the machine. She explained that she had seen him standing there with his friend and felt stirred to buy each of the children some candy. I gave her my approval and my son came back with his treat.

When we arrived home, I sat my sweet boy on my lap, and I asked him if he had seen Jesus today. He looked at me with a puzzled look, so I continued.

"Sweetheart, you were very generous today and did you notice something special happen?

"The woman bought me candy?" he asked.

"Yes, because you blessed others with your generosity, God stirred her heart to bless you in return. God gave you a gift today, son."

"Mom," he said, "I just wanted them (the kids) to see Jesus."

I said, "Well, not only did you show Jesus to others through your generosity, but in return you were able to experience His love through the woman's action."

Suddenly, a sweet smile came across his face. I knew then that he understood that God had specifically chosen to bless him today. I could see the truth enter his heart.

When he saw his dad later that day, the first words out of his mouth were, "Dad, God blessed me today!"

Mom, continue to teach your children to be generous to others. You may think they're not listening, but one day, you'll see that the seeds you've planted have indeed taken fruit.
